Rather, this golf oasis serves to further the region's famed eye for design by presenting an all-star cast of some of the game's most honored and respected course architects.

From the prolific creators of classic SoCal routings to courses crafted by a host of golf's best all-time players, here's your checklist for public play Greater Palm Springs courses designed by the game's greatest hands.

Architects

William F. Bell

Tahquitz Creek Legends Course -- One of two fun plays at the Palm Springs' locale (both offering a fine value), the Legends recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

Bermuda Dunes Country Club – The longtime Bob Hope host with 27-holes of championship play is now offering seasonal memberships to the public at its member club.

Indian Canyons North Course – Classic style of SoCal routing offers continued green-to-tee views on a track once enjoyed by the likes of the Rat Pack.

Clive Clark

Eagle Falls – A former player on the Euro Tour, local resident Clark's Eagle Falls design in Indio proves a fun and challenging complement to on-site Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino.

Indian Wells Golf Resort Celebrity Course – Aptly counted among the finest publics in SoCal (and one of the best municipal facilities in the country), the Celebrity provides an eye-catching mix of water features and colorful flowers.

Pete Dye

Mountain and Dunes Courses at La Quinta Resort & Club – If but one day affords to play the sister courses at La Quinta Resort, opt for the Mountain, which routes up and along the Santa Rosa Mountains across an awesome back nine.

stadium course at pga west

Stadium Course at PGA WEST – Long charted among the toughest public courses in the West, the infamous Stadium is now part of the PGA Tour's CareerBuilder Challenge rotation each January.

Westin Mission Hills Pete Dye Resort Course – The Westin's on-site course (its Gary Player Signature Course is just a mile away) may not prove an A-lister in Dye's storied portfolio, but the final hole challenge will no doubt remind players of the designer's penchant for pain.

John Fought

cimarron golf resort boulder course

Cimarron Golf Resort Boulder Course – Among the most unique designs in the oasis, the spare surrounds and wide-open fairways make an especially-engaging resort play for those wayward with the driver.

Indian Wells Golf Resort Players Course – Sister course to Clark's Celebrity design, the tough Players Course sports some of the most inspired bunker design in all of SoCal.

Arthur Hills

Heritage Palms Golf Club – An underrated play on the valley's east end, first-time guests to the community course will awe in the quality of the sand.

Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry (with John Cook)

Desert Willow Golf Resort – Long charted among the top plays across Greater Palm Springs, the Firecliff and Mountain View Courses are drawn by the same hands who created Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open.

Casey O'Callaghan/Amy Alcott

Indian Canyons South Course – A redesigned treasure in Palm Springs, the South offers a terrific collection of strategic Par 4s and serves as a visual homage to the region's history with its Washingtonia filifea bearded palms.

Ted Robinson, Sr.

JW Marriott Desert Springs – Known as the King of Waterscapes, the valley's most prolific course designer shows his eye for water-laden, resort-style play in the Palm and Valley Courses.

Mission Lakes CC – Loved by locals, the Desert Hot Springs course is tougher than most residential-style plays in the desert, as evidenced by a demanding run of finishing holes.

Omni Rancho Las Palmas – The 27-holes of play with three distinct nines are best enjoyed by with a round on the West, which routes through the resort property.

Palm Royale – An 18-hole Par-3 course that's walking-only and provides a fine time for players of all level.

Tahquitz Creek Resort Course – The tougher of the twin Tahquitz plays, the Resort sports some swaling greens coupled with Robinson's signature water features.

Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley

Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon  – Come the summer season, valley visitors may want to enjoy a day up the hill to enjoy the more moderate temps at the bucolic surrounds of the Legends and Champions Courses.

terra lago golf indio

Golf Club at Terra Lago – A one-time host to the former Skins Game, the 36 holes of the North & South Courses provide a unique mix of resort-style tests and rustic desert surrounds on the valley's east end.

Shadow Hills South and North – Some surprising Indio muscle on both tracks, with the North's 18-hole Par-3 making for a great test of both mid and lofted irons.

Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Desert Dunes GC – The Desert Hot Springs favorite gets a bad rap for its susceptibility to wind conditions, but on the vast majority of days, the play provides a pastoral and nature-laden day of golf.

Great Players turned Great Architects

Nick Faldo

Marriott's Shadow Ridge GC – The first-ever domestic course design from the six-time major winner is a true test of iron play. Getable off the tee, the track defends with it large, sloping greens and Australian Sandbelt-inspired bunkering.

Gary Player

westin mission hills gary player course

Westin Mission Hills – The lone California design from Player requires some of The Black Knight's luminary fitness to survive. Visual challenges abound, with scorecards oft-augmented by the subtlety of mounded green surrounds.

Jack Nicklaus

escena golf club

Escena Golf Club – In truth, a course from the Nicklaus Design team than The Golden Bear himself, but a really solid track nonetheless, complemented by what many consider the best public clubhouse in the area.

Nicklaus Tournament at PGA West – Like PGA WEST's Stadium, the Nick is now also a part of the CareerBuilder Challenge rotation.  For amateurs, the elevated approach shots can indeed make for a Bear market.

Greg Norman

norman resort course at pga west

Norman Resort Course at PGA WEST – Peacefully situated away from the engaging din of PGA WEST's hub, the taut creation from the Shark is designed with minimal turf, surrounded by what hosts call the D.G. (Decomposed Granite), which requires a few feel reps to conquer.

Arnold Palmer

classic club golf

Classic Club – The sprawling and stately surrounds prove an ever-attractive play across a course built for the pros.

SilverRock Resort – A late 2017 retouch of the course's back nine (to accommodate the property's eventual hotel and conference spaces) truly enhances the allure of The King's design, with several of the new creations providing fresh, postcard perspectives of the mountain surroundings.

Gene Sarazen

Shadow Mountain – A rare course design from The Squire, the first-ever course in Palm Desert is a great shorter play (about 5,400 yards), which makes for a true test of wedge accuracy.
