MORNING
What better way to kick off a vacation day with the kids than with a homemade pop-tart? Swing by Wilma & Frieda’s, known for their comfort foods with a twist, and grab a few breakfast treats for them (extra sprinkles, please!) and one of their delicious lattes or hot chocolates for yourself.
Next, take a walk on the wild side at The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, where a new Australian Adventures exhibit invites animal lovers of all ages to wander among wallabies and hear the kookaburras sing. Giraffe feedings are also available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
If, on the other hand, you have history buffs in the family, you may want to head to the Palm Springs Air Museum for some early morning exploration that will take your knowledge of vintage aircraft to new heights.
AFTERNOON
After your animal or aircraft encounters, head to the Café at Shields for lunch. This al fresco eatery serves up delicious American and Mexican dishes alongside beautiful garden views, and you can never go wrong with a post-lunch date shake made from locally grown dates!
Once everyone has refueled, you’ll want to head back out to those wide-open spaces. Make your way to the Indian Canyons with Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours & Events, where you can access miles of hiking and horseback-riding trails as well as seasonal, crystal-clear waterfalls. Your kids will enjoy learning more about the history of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, whose ancestors have called these canyons home since time immemorial, and will gain a new appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding them.
EVENING
After a long (but fun) day, you'll all be ready to sit back, relax and enjoy the views. Las Casuelas Terraza and Lulu California Bistro offer spacious outdoor patio dining areas and family-friendly menus that even your pickiest eaters will love.
