When it debuted in 2011, Cathedral City’s Desert Ice Castle glided onto the scene with Olympic pride. The facility’s Frank Carroll had attained white-hot status from coaching Evan Lysacek to a figure skating gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Coach Carroll had also guided the legendary Michelle Kwan, who garnered Olympic silver and bronze medals in 1998 and 2002 respectively, plus multiple National and World Figure Skating Championships titles.

The 1997 Olympic Coach of the Year originally linked to the regulation-size skating and hockey rink to be closer to his home in Palm Springs. During Coach Carroll’s Desert Ice Castle stint, Olympic and World champions from across the globe flocked to Cathedral City for training with the ice master.

Among these stars were Lysacek, who hit the ice to prepare for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and 1976 Olympic and World Champion, Dorothy Hamill, who spiraled, spun and lutz jumped in the cool desert facility.

Within its first six months of operation, Desert Ice Castle gained additional glory when it was tapped to host the 2014 Professional Skaters Association International Conference and Trade Show.

The coolest place in Coachella Valley turns up the heat with hockey games that seat 150 fans. Options include programs for beginners, youths and adults, with youth and adult teams granted membership in the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association.

The venue has also chilled and thrilled with such competitive events as:

  • 2012 Chowda Cup Classic Hockey Tournament
  • 2012-2015 Shary Friel Memorial Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament
