Air Service
In 2024, the airline industry achieved record-breaking numbers despite challenges such as geopolitical tensions and economic concerns. According to the Airports Council International (ACI) World, global passenger traffic reached 9.5 billion in 2024, marking a 10% increase from 2023 and surpassing 2019 levels for the first time. A total of 5.85 billion seats were available, exceeding 2019 levels by 2% due to airlines utilizing larger aircraft. International full-year traffic rose by 13.6%, with capacity up 12.8%. Domestic full-year traffic increased by 5.7%, while capacity expanded by 2.5%. December 2024 ended strongly, with overall demand rising 8.6% year-on-year and capacity growing 5.6%. International demand increased by 10.6% and domestic demand by 5.5%. The December load factor reached 84%, setting a record for the month.
PSP achieved significant success in 2024, setting five monthly passenger records in February, March, April, May, and December. More than 3.2 million passengers enplaned and deplaned, only slightly fewer than 2023, while maintaining an average load factor of over 75%.
With the exception of the pandemic years, total passengers have been continuing to increase (see graph below).
New nonstop flights and expanded services in 2024 provided more options for residents and visitors:
- United launched the first-ever seasonal, daily service from Washington, D.C. (IAD).
- Frontier resumed year-round service from Denver (DEN) and San Francisco (SFO).
- Porter added new seasonal nonstop flights from Toronto (YYZ).
- Alaska moved its JFK flight to October, earlier than December 2023.
- American added a daily flight to Dallas (DFW) in February and March.
- Avelo extended Santa Rosa (STS) service throughout the summer.
- Delta began service to Minneapolis (MSP) in September instead of October.
PSP concluded 2024 with several significant improvements:
- Reimagined food and retail offerings.
- The unveiling of the Agua Caliente Concourse.
- New shade structures and grants for a new baggage handling system.
- Initiation of an updated airport master plan.
The Tourism Development team, along with our aviation consultant, Ailevon Pacific, engaged face-to-face with airline network planners at events such as Routes America, ACI Jumpstart, Airport Roundtables, Allegiant’s Annual Conference, and World Routes. Additionally, we hosted WestJet’s network planning team for a client FAM.
