Blog created in partnership with the Meet the Mentor Program. Tiffany Chang visited Greater Palm Springs in April and shared her experiences below.

With more than 100 golf courses in the region, Greater Palm Springs is surprisingly not as intimidating for beginners as it may seem. In fact, many newcomers are teeing up for their first swings in the desert. This trend reflects a broader surge in interest, as the  National Golf Foundation estimates 16.5 million new golfers have joined the sport since 2020—many of whom are finding welcoming destinations like Greater Palm Springs.

Known as the Golf Capital of the West, Greater Palm Springs is one of the premier golf destinations in the nation. The region’s unbeatable, consistent sunny weather and mountain landscapes offer an ideal environment for the sport.  Because this Southern California oasis is a popular leisure destination, it attracts many families who are looking for something fun to do while vacationing and appeals to a growing number of women golfers.  According to the National Golf Foundation, 2024 saw record levels of female participation and people of color in golf.

Tom Burley, PGA head professional at Indian Wells Golf Resort, says the region’s mostly temperate, dry, and manageable year-round climate is especially appealing for beginners.

“This area exudes golf — it’s one of the main attractions here,” says Burley, who’s been with the resort since 2007. “Combine that with the mountains and the weather, I don’t think there could be a more peaceful, scenic spot to start learning how to golf.”

Here are five beginner-friendly golf activities to try year-round in Greater Palm Springs:

The Bunker Bar at PGA WEST

A simulator is often where many first-time golfers begin. Learning proper stance, grip, and swing takes time and practice, and doing so in a private, climate-controlled environment can feel safer and more focused than heading straight to a course.

Enter The Bunker Bar inside of the Pete Dye Clubhouse at PGA WEST in La Quinta. It features two sophisticated TrackMan 4 simulators that let players experience virtual rounds on real course maps. This setup is ideal for individuals and groups, serving as a confidence-boosting warm-up before hitting the real greens.

Before, during, or after a session, enjoy a meal from the clubhouse’s modern and relaxed restaurant. With panoramic views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and a menu inspired by California flavors, it’s the perfect place to unwind without ever missing your turn.

PGA WEST Golf Academy

PGA WEST, a golf resort that is home to nine iconic golf courses designed by the game's greatest visionaries. Recognized for more than three decades as the "Western Home of Golf in America."Once you're ready to play outdoors, PGA WEST — the 2,000-acre “Western Home of Golf in America” — is the place to go. Its acclaimed Golf Academy offers world-class instruction from nationally recognized coaches.

PGA WEST’s instructors were named Best Young Teachers in America (2025-2026) and Best Teachers in Every State (2025) by Golf Digest. They create individualized plans that include video analysis and launch monitor systems, teach 1-hour lessons, and even offer two- or three-day golf school programs with a 3:1 student-teacher ratio.

With 163 holes across nine courses designed by Pete Dye, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Weiskopf, PGA WEST offers an iconic experience for all golfers. Beginners may want to start at the Nicklaus tournament course, often called the “must-play” course for golfers of all abilities.

Indian Wells Golf Resort

IW Golf ResortNamed “America’s Friendliest Golf Resort” by Golf Advisor in 2017, Indian Wells Golf Resort is open to the public and ideal for beginners. In a region known for tennis and upscale country clubs, this resort stands out for its welcoming vibe.

“In Indian Wells, there’s a culture of hospitality that stands out more than anywhere else,” says Burley. “The sun is shining, there’s an abundance of golf courses, and the people are friendly.”

The staff appreciates that beginners may feel nervous, so they do everything possible to create a low-pressure, encouraging environment.  Connecting with their guests and sharing in the human experience is what sets Indian Wells apart.  The culture is rooted in the belief that it is easy to wake up and be kind, and it’s a choice to have a bad attitude.

“We are normal people,” Burley explains. “Normalcy goes a long way, and we live in the gray area – that attitude of ‘Can do, [let’s] make it happen!’ goes a long way.”
