Happy hours specifically geared to the LGBTQ community have long been staples in Greater Palm Springs. Dozens of venues, ranging from the super fab to the ultra-hip, have become celebrated stomping grounds for the LGBTQ community near and far. The social scene now ranks among the most festive in Southern California.

Take note of the following list of LGBTQ Happy Hours and learn more about what’s offered and why it’s vital to place these gems on your social calendar.

Blackbook Bar and Restaurant

Blessed be: There’s an actual Whiskey Altar here. Fitting, considering Blackbook houses the largest whiskey selection in Greater Palm Springs with more than 260 whiskeys. The large selection of tequila and gin is stellar, too, and with more than 50 different varieties of beer, spirits runneth over here. Cocktail Hour is 4-6 p.m. daily with $5 pints and a buck off all bottle and 20-ounce draft beers. Oenophiles appreciate the $2 off all wines by the glass. Of note: Blackbook gives back to the local community significantly, supporting various organizations such as the Desert AIDS Project. It is also an honoree of Desert Sun’s 2019 Best of the Valley winner for Best Classic Cocktails. Cheers to that.

Chill Bar

One of the most vibrant and fun LGBTQ bars on Arenas Road not only goes for spaciousness but is strongly dedicated to community, too—it was recognized by the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. To that end, Chill Bar is known for “celebrating gay pride every day.” Happy Hour is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., but if you stay longer, you’ll be treated to a fiery round of entertainment during the evening. Tuesday’s Dating Game and Thursday’s “SIN Thursdays” (Service Industry Thursdays) are vibrant with their own drink specials. Enjoy the patio, or grab a seat inside by the bar and nearby tables. Chill.

The Purple Room Supper Club

Michael Holmes’ famous outpost has long been the place for dinner and a show but it also has a fiery happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 4-5 p.m. Sundays. In fact, enjoy Happy Hour drink and menu prices all day Tuesday if you sit at the bar. There’s a wonderful Rat Pack vibe here and the place has been known for many a celebrity sighting. As historic as it is hip—Holmes’ own drag wonder, The Judy Show, still marvels—there’s never a dull moment here.

Rio Azul Mexican Bar & Grill

The authentic Mexican fare is a winner and you’ll experience one of the area’s most vibrant and well-attended Happy Hour scenes from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 2-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. From bar bites to drink specials ($5 drafts, well drinks, house margaritas, and house wines; $7 frozen Bellini and well martinis), the scene is always hoppin’. The LGBTQ component is just as robust and the landing is one of the more ideal places for groups of friends to enjoy cocktails and conversation. Best bets: Taco Tuesdays where $2 crispy tacos and two-for-one lime margaritas await, and Sunday’s Desert Divas Drag Brunch (11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.).

Retro Room Lounge

A hit among LGBTQ revelers, the daily happy hour from 2-7 p.m. features cleverly dubbed drinks—from “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Karma Karmel Chameleon.” (The latter features Absolute Vodka, blue curacao, orange juice, and Sprite in a caramel drizzled glass!) The handcrafted cocktails here are among some of the most inventive you’ll find in Greater Palm Springs. Look for drink specials galore weekly—from Monday’s Martini Madness (with $3 lite drafts to boot) to Wine Down Wednesdays, where all wines are half-price until 10 p.m.

The Roost Bar Lounge

The LGBTQ Cathedral City bar wins points for having one of the area’s longest happy hours—from noon to 7 p.m. Better yet, on Mondays, Happy Hour is a daylong event, where you can enjoy $2 off premium cocktails. Elsewhere, beers are $2 and there’s a $1 off premium wines. Well martinis are $5.25. All that and music videos on five big-screen TVs from Orange Door, the super fab music video company that supplies videos to hip bars. Come by at 4 p.m. Sundays for the Showtunes T-Dance with DJ Mr. D. Its strut time, rooster.

Stacy’s

People arrive en masse for the nightly entertainment at this chic, intimate piano bar, but long before all of that fun stuff begins, Happy Hour is active from the time Stacy’s opens until 6 p.m. Daily drink specials for $5 are downright cost-friendly. One of the reason’s Stacy’s stands out as a must-visit LGBTQ venue is the staff’s devotion to clientele. Oh, and try Songo—bingo with songs—on Tuesdays.

The Tropicale Palm Springs

Now, here’s a neon-lit, retro-divine portal in Downtown Palm Springs that is worthy of repeat visits. Happy Hour perks can be found on the food menu, where affordable and sharable plates go for $9 and up (Vietnamese-style Spring Rolls to Baja Shrimp Tacos stand out). This is the place for everybody cavorting in and around Greater Palm Springs to be seen, by the way. The LGBTQ clientele is remarkably celebratory, fashionably dressed, and always engaged in some sort of robust conversation. The patio scene knocks it out of the park.
