Big Morongo Canyon Desert Willow Trail Loop
  • Big Morongo Preserve
  • Morongo Valley, CA 92256
Details

Stroll through open fields of goldenbush, thickets of honey mesquite, and marsh habitats on this moderate 1-mile loop trail, one of many that traverse the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. The preserve, an oasis that encompasses more than 31,000 acres of native flora and fauna, forms part of the Sand to Snow National Monument and is located off Highway 62 in Morongo Valley (about a 30-minute drive from downtown Palm Springs). Several animal species, such as the gray fox, cottontail rabbit, and bobcat, call this sanctuary home, and sightings are always possible — so keep your camera and binoculars handy! After parking in the unpaved lot, where you’ll find restrooms and a picnic area, head to the visitors kiosk — your go-to spot for wildlife information, trail maps, and other essentials. No dogs, bikes, or horses are allowed on the Desert Willow Trail, which begins on the boardwalk near the kiosk before transitioning to a dirt path and meandering through lush desert landscape. You’ll cross a small wooden bridge before rejoining the boardwalk and returning to the kiosk. Total Distance: 1 mile Level: Moderate
