Details

Soak in the serene surroundings and let the sweet sound of birdsong serenade you on the 0.7-mile Marsh Trail, located within the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, one of Greater Palm Springs’ hidden gems. The trail, which follows a trickling stream and immerses visitors in the rich riparian habitat of the Sand to Snow National Monument, is actually a boardwalk, making it wheelchair accessible and perfect for families with small children and strollers. Several benches and decks scattered along the walkway invite curious travelers to stop and savor the experience (or simply enjoy the much sought-after shade). Thanks to a year-round flow of water, the result of snowmelt and the Morongo Fault running through the canyons, the Marsh Trail stands out as a birder’s paradise — more than 240 migrating and breeding species flock here, including the golden eagle and red-tailed hawk, both of which are known to nest in the area. To explore this beautiful oasis in the middle of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, park in the unpaved lot off Highway 64 and follow the path past the preserve’s seasonal butterfly garden and education center, where you’ll see signs for the various trailheads.
