Big Morongo Canyon Through Hike
  • Big Morongo Preserve
  • Morongo Valley, CA 92256

The Through Hike, a moderately rated trail in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, follows a willow stream for 5.4 miles and gives hikers a whole new world to wander. The preserve encompasses 31,000 acres of verdant, spring-fed marshland and is home to one of the most beautiful oases in Greater Palm Springs. As a sanctuary for native plant and animal life, the preserve and its trail system are a must for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Once you’ve reached the end of the Through Hike, you can return via the same route — doubling your distance and workout — or have transportation waiting. The diverse wildlife hikers can experience makes the trek especially memorable, from bighorn sheep and mule deer to the desert cottontail (pick up a brochure at the visitors kiosk to help you identify any animal tracks you may come across in your wanderings). Arrow-weed, honey mesquite, and cottonwood trees flourish along this path, as well as several migrating and nesting birds. Finish the day with a picnic lunch at the tables near the parking lot and entrance. Total Distance: 5.4 miles Level: Moderate
