Named for conservationist and Idyllwild resident Ernie Maxwell, this easy-to-moderate hike traverses some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenery in the San Jacinto Mountains. Begin your alpine adventure at Humber Park, located within the San Bernardino National Forest, where restrooms and picnic tables offer a pre- or post-hike break. You’ll need an Adventure Pass ($5/day) in order to park in the paved lot, so be sure to pick one up at the Idyllwild ranger station. (However, if you prefer to park for free, there is limited space on the dirt road at the far end of the trail; ask for directions at the ranger station.) The 4.6-mile out-and-back trail passes by a mountain stream and immerses hikers and horseback riders in wild woodland awash with trees — cedars, oaks, and evergreens. Ample shade and a mostly downhill stretch for those beginning at Humber Park make this an especially popular outing for families and leashed pups, and wildflowers during the spring and summer add another enchanting element to the excursion.
