Secret Surprises at TKB Bakery & Deli

By Amy Yerrington

TKB Bakery & Deli isn’t a secret to those who live in Greater Palm Springs, but if you happen to be visiting it could miss your list of must-dos. It might very well surprise you to know that this unassuming family-run bakery and deli in Indio is listed as the 4th best restaurant in the nation on Of course, once you taste TKB’s famous desserts and sandwiches, you will totally agree.

The business that began some two decades ago by three siblings selling cookie dough door-to-door as a school fundraising project is now selling that sweet dough to grocery stores all over Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. Its name is part of the secret too. TKB stands for the “the kids’ business” and brothers Brandon and Nathan, along with sister Melina are still hands-on making sure the operation stays ahead of the curve. In addition to the dough business is this gem of a deli that is insanely busy at lunchtime when customers arrive to feast on mammoth sandwiches and heavenly desserts.

I arrived at TKB hungry, which is exactly the way it should be. I was instantly seduced by the array of desserts, from dreamy lemon and blueberry bars to humongous chocolate chip cookies, but decided to stake my claim on a sandwich creation first. Actually, I wanted to do more than eat one. I wanted to make one and see what magic goes inside those home-baked buns. The deli’s number one sandwich is the “Chicken Chipotle,” but we were making the equally famous “Trump,” which Melina advised was not named after that Trump. We began by opening a freshly baked jalapeno bun, then added mayo, avocado, salami, turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and even chips! The entire creation was then drizzled with the secret chipotle sauce. I discovered I am not cut out for this demanding production process (I was still on mayo while Melina was on avocado), but definitely suited to eat the end product.

This deli might be unassuming, but it is an awesome family experience, especially if you are a cookie monster like me. They even give you a free chocolate chip cookie on your first visit—my kind of place. And, if you don’t see what you want on the menu, they’ll make a custom sandwich creation for you. Like me, you’ll leave feeling like part of the family and return every time you are back in the valley. Pretty chill…
