Tribal Nations in Greater Palm Springs: Honoring a Rich Heritage, Driving a Prosperous Future

Greater Palm Springs’ story begins long before tourism began to develop in the region in the early 1900s. Archaeological findings suggest Native peoples have lived in the area for more than 8,000 years, making them the first stewards of this vibrant desert oasis.

Today, five sovereign tribes reside within the area that comprises Greater Palm Springs. These federally recognized tribes are: Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, Cabazon Band of Cahuilla Indians, Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, and Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians.

Each of these tribes plays an essential role in the cultural and economic fabric of the Coachella Valley. In addition to preserving their unique traditions and heritage, the tribes are among the region’s most innovative and impactful economic drivers.
