Stewardship & Accessibility
Visit Greater Palm Springs continued advancing its commitment to destination stewardship through initiatives that promote sustainability, accessibility, inclusion, and community impact. During the reporting period, the organization expanded programs and partnerships that support responsible tourism, strengthen local businesses and nonprofits, elevate Greater Palm Springs as a leader in inclusive destination management, and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Sustainability
Regional Stewardship: Sharing the 4 Cs Framework
Throughout the spring, our team actively promoted Greater Palm Springs as a thought leader in sustainable tourism, presenting our core 4 Cs of Sustainability (Conservation, Commerce, Community, and Culture) framework to local civic bodies and meetings industry organizations. These engagements highlighted our destination's approach to both environmental stewardship and social sustainability.
- Indio Sustainability Commission (March 23): Lauren presented the 4 Cs framework to local commissioners, demonstrating how regional tourism alignment can directly support municipal sustainability goals and foster community-wide stewardship.
- ESPA National Webinar (April 22): Serving as a featured panelist for the Event Service Professionals Association (ESPA) webinar on "Social Sustainability in Tourism," Lauren shared our 4 Cs framework with a national audience of hospitality professionals, emphasizing the intersection of community engagement and destination management.
- PCMA Inclusivity Webinar (March 31): Featured as a panelist for a Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) national webinar focused on "Creating Inclusive Events & Fostering Psychological Safety." The presentation highlighted key case studies from VGPS on our inclusive marketing strategies, our progress as a Certified Autism Destination, and our comprehensive preparation to welcome the upcoming IGLTA (International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) Global Convention in October 2025.
By championing these frameworks on both local and national stages, Visit Greater Palm Springs continues to elevate our region's reputation as an inclusive and sustainable destination.
Kind Traveler Initiative
- Expanding Partner Network: Three new partners have been secured: Royal Sun, Big Wheel Tours, and Good Vibes Sound Bath - all of which are scheduled to go live on the platform in the coming weeks. Each partner has selected Friends of the Desert Mountains as their local charity beneficiary, directly funding regional land conservation and environmental education.
- Measurable Community Impact: The program's financial and environmental impact continues to strengthen significantly. Cumulative funds raised grew from $50,332 in March to $54,946 in April—a month-over-month increase of $4,614 (9%). This growth aligns perfectly with a parallel 9% lift across our core positive-impact metrics, reflecting heightened traveler engagement and increased local partner activity.
Openings remain to onboard two additional local hospitality or experience partners as we look to expand the program's reach through the remainder of 2026.
Accessibility & Inclusion
Partnership with Caravanserai Project – BizUp: Creative Professionals
In alignment with our commitment to inclusive economic development, VGPS partnered with Caravanserai Project to launch a 10-week business development cohort for creative professionals across Greater Palm Springs, which commenced on March 31, 2026. This initiative brings together 25 local artists, artisans, and creative entrepreneurs to strengthen their business acumen, expand their professional networks, and ensure long-term career sustainability. Participants receive targeted, hands-on training focused on critical skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, financial management, and branding strategies tailored specifically to the creative sector.
By connecting local talent with practical business resources and mentorship, this program empowers participants to transform their artistic passions into thriving enterprises, ultimately strengthening the region's creative economy and reinforcing Greater Palm Springs as a vibrant hub for innovation and equitable workforce growth. To celebrate their achievements and highlight their work to the community, Visit Greater Palm Springs will host a special showcase event for this cohort in the Fall.
Upcycled
As part of our ongoing commitment to more sustainable events, materials from the recent International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Global Convention in Palm Springs have been repurposed into a new line of functional items, including pouches, totes, key rings, and laptop sleeves. These products were upcycled from event flags and street banners, extending the lifecycle of materials that would otherwise be discarded and reducing overall event waste. This effort reflects a practical, visible approach to sustainability by turning temporary event assets into lasting, usable goods while reinforcing our broader destination stewardship goals.
Autism Certification and Outreach Update
Civic Recognition & Regional Impact
On April 28, Community Engagement Manager Josh Heinz represented Visit Greater Palm Springs at the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting to highlight the region's Certified Autism Destination initiative in honor of Autism Awareness Month. Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez and the Board commended the organization's strategic investment in accessibility, noting that our regional network now includes more than 30 certified entities and 3,500 trained hospitality professionals. Impressed by the initiative's profound community and economic impact, Supervisor Perez requested that his team draft an official county proclamation to formally honor this vital work. The presentation and the broader initiative were subsequently featured in an extensive profile by the Riverside Record.
Corporate Engagement
On April 7, Josh presented to the workforce at Granite Construction, sharing his personal 25-year journey as a parent in the autism community, his work producing the annual Concert for Autism to support the Desert Autism Foundation, and how those lived experiences fueled the launch of our regional destination initiative. This educational outreach underscores our commitment to sharing best practices and driving neurodiversity awareness beyond standard hospitality boundaries and into the broader local business community.
